The characteristics of plug valves are as follows:

Due to several practical limitations related to valve design and long-term reliability. The reasons are as below :
1. Real Operating Conditions
Silicone can withstand short-term high temperatures, but long-term exposure to high temperatures (e.g., 130–150 °C in SIP/steam sterilization) can cause:
Softening or flow (creep) of the seal
Loss of elasticity, reducing sealing performance
Potential leakage over time
Short CIP cycles with hot water may be acceptable, but prolonged or repeated high-heat exposure stresses the material beyond its reliable performance window.
2. Valve Structure Limitations
Plug valves rely on a tight fit between the stainless steel body and the plug.
Silicone seals are compressed between metal surfaces to maintain a leak-free seal.
At high temperatures:
Silicone softens → plug may become harder to operate (increased torque)
Seal may deform unevenly → uneven or incomplete sealing
3. Thermal Expansion Mismatch
Stainless steel and silicone have different thermal expansion coefficients.
At high temperatures:
Silicone expands more than metal → seal extrusion, jamming, or uneven compression
Can accelerate wear or damage the plug surface
4. Long-Term Reliability
High-temperature exposure over time accelerates:
Hardening, cracking, or permanent deformation of the silicone
Loss of sealing integrity
Hygienic valves require zero leakage.
5. Practical Recommendations
For high-temperature applications or repeated steam sterilization:
Use Ball Valves or Diaphragm Valves specifically designed for high-temperature CIP/SIP.
✅ Summary:
Although silicone can tolerate high temperatures in theory, the plug valve design, thermal expansion differences, and long-term seal reliability make it suitable only for low-temperature applications. Using it at high temperatures risks leakage, increased operating torque, and shorter seal life.
